This is not an issue that is going to go away over night over even in the next couple of years, it took our country a long time to develop the habits and the change in lifestyle that is has. Even though unfortunately these things seem to have caused our country to be turning into blobs of skin and fat with little motivation. That is not the county that America was built to be. We have the capability of being a strong nation with strong citizens and not just for the sake of a country but as individuals as well. Everyone deserves to be happy in the skin they were given for the rest of their lives and it is important for us to feel comfortable with ourselves and nobody is when they are overweight. This country deserves more but we need to give it deserves. It often makes me wonder when our country made this dramatic change for the worse and what helped encourage this bad path? Is it even possible to turn it around since this is based off individuals being offered choices and choosing bad ones? In the weeks to come I am going to wonder what other countries do to keep their citizens healthy and happy? Every country has a different lifestyle and culture giving them different living situations and issues to deal with, maybe if we inherited some of the food and eating habits from other countries it would help surge the fight against obesity forward. Unfortunately, these are only suggestions and thoughts, hopefully with more information over the weeks comes new ideas against this issue.

It seems that technology has not only taken over how we live our daily lives, but it also has taken over our capability to entertain ourselves. If you talk to older generations about their children and their hobbies and activities, they would have to drag their children inside since they would spend all outside. Now parents are ripping the television remotes from their kids, tossing the cellphones in the drawers and doing everything in their power to get their children active, and the problem that keeps getting in the way but can’t seem to avoid is technology and the constant need to be around or interacting with it. That is what this article talks about, the average American spends apparently over five hours just on the television and that doesn’t include cellphones, laptops and other devices we have come up with. This article had me wondering when and why we become so dependent off technology that is has made us lazy. Instead of going to the football game people would rather watch it at home or instead of playing outside kids would rather be playing online with their friends from completely different houses! This is a big issue as to why Americans are inactive and lazy citizens which plays a huge roll in someone’s capability to maintain their own health and weight.  I enjoyed this article because it put some perspective on the issues that we are allowing our children and ourselves to be absorbed by these small devices that we don’t even seem to see the damage it is cause, which honestly is quite terrifying for people who continue to abuse it.  America is not the only country that is struggling with Obesity, but it seems to be one of the only powerful countries that fears for the capability of being able to protect itself. We have the money, the weapons and the population for a powerful military to protect its country but what happens if the Obesity rate continues to rise and citizens continue to care less and less about their health and their body weight, this peer reviewed journal article challenges the question of will America be able to fight for themselves if they can longer actually fight. Obesity is a debilitating disease it takes away so much of your capability to function and live on your own but without military we are unsafe and any country of it’s choosing could attack and invade and if we were all, or at least most of us were overweight and obese we would never be able to protect ourselves. How are we supposed to prevent that though? Big changes would need to be made to the that nation to prevent something as big as that from occurring to our citizens. Both of these articles showed me an extreme amount of concern for the health of our country. The both point out the constant increase in obesity and the affect it is having on our citizens and on our future decisions we make for this country. I do believe Gagnon and Hinkley share the same growing concern with this epidemic.

Image: Problems of Being Overweight

Reading this article clarified a lot of problems that the United States is having with adolescents, adults and elderly people and their over all health and weight. This article talks about what can possibly affect people’s capability of gaining and losing weight and it talks about the factors that play a role in the obesity rate that continues to become a growing issue including their gender and their age. After reading this source I wonder why some people are given the metabolism of a young child and some people have one of a sixty-year-old. Metabolism does help play a huge roll in someone’s capability to maintain a healthy weight, including what were eating. It also had me wondering if what the mother is eating during pregnancy and how she maintains her health will have an affect on the baby’s weight and health throughout childhood. It also makes me wonder how gender can play such a big roll in weight, age makes sense since as you get older your body gets slower and things stop working as well. I found this source to be extremely useful and helpful when it came to information about Obesity within the United States, giving us a better understanding of what can play a role in our health. The other source we used is the website is the center of disease control, should we consider obesity a disease? It is something that many people nationwide and worldwide seem to struggle with and I, in fact, believe that Obesity and eating disorders are a metal disease with physical side effects that many Americans cannot get control of. This website and these articles didn’t really leave anything up for question when it came to obesity, this article and website and more than enough information about it and on every angle of the topic from how to watch and prevent it, on children’s obesity rates and even resources on the slow growth of obesity state wide. After reading this source I wonder why America has allowed an issue that we have so much information about get so out of hand and so common for the average citizen to experience. I understand it is not something the government can force on people, exercise and a healthy lifestyle but they certainly don’t enforce it either. I enjoyed reading from this website, it had a lot of information and it was easy to get a lot of it just from one source.

Obesity is an ongoing problem that America continues to struggle with and in fact seems to even be getting worse. In this blog I want to be discussing Why are the United States Obesity Rates Continuing to Increase? We know that the United States does not have a clean track record when it comes to our foods and the choices that we make when it comes to eating patterns but why does the problem continue to grow and get worse when we claim to know the underlying cause to our citizens obesity issues. Do Americans even know how bad the problem is getting? I remember when I put on a few pounds I didn’t even notice, now I look back and I couldn’t even believe the weight I had reached. In this blog I want to really investigate the differences between America and other countries that could be affecting our health, this includes diet, lifestyle and even our social status. One thing that is certain is that something needs to change unless we want our quality of lives to suffer because we can’t control our appetite. In this blog I hope it will bring a lot of light and self-awareness to many other people’s life styles. This isn’t a problem that other countries seem to be having either. Of course, every country will have a percentage of people that are over weight and in need of exercise, dieting and habit changes but in the United States it is not uncommon anymore to see extremely over weight people. I work in the restaurant business and unfortunately, I have seen some couples come in who have a hard time fitting themselves into a booth or at a table, this is no way for any person to live and our country and the habits we have allowed it to form are promoting this unhealthy living.

Good Morning Everyone!
My name is Madison Lair, thank you for joining my blog and decided to follow this research journey with me. I am originally from New England, about 30 minutes north of Boston. I came to Colorado to go to school and am now studying nursing at Front Range Community College. Our English teacher has asked us to research a specific topic, so join me in studying and researching the increase in obseisty rates of children in the United States. We will look into the history of our countries food industries, the rates of children’s health and the day to day living of someone suffering from obesity.
